Overview

Studio portrait of seated 1106 Trooper Thomas Mawdsley, 10 Light Horse

Historical information

1106 Thomas Mawdsley, aged 37, was married with a wife in Manchester when he enlisted in 10 Light Horse on 17 April 1915. He embarked on HMAT A61 Kanowna on 30 June 1915. It is presumed that his three years service in the Boer war and subsequently in the 1906 Zulu Rebellion (units not recorded) enabled his rapid deployment. He was returned to Australia on 4 December 1915 suffering from the consequences of dysentery but also noted “alcoholic, quite useless”. From his service records it appears that he was employed on Line of Communications duties including as an Invalid as a guard at the Concentration camp at Trial Bay. He was discharged on 4 April 1918 and died at the North Head Quarantine Station in Sydney of pneumonia on 9 April 1918.
