Virtual Discovery #27 - Crab, Crayfish and Dolphin

Overview

Part of a series of “Virtual Discovery” presentations featuring the military heritage of Rottnest island produced in parallel with Virtual Visit posts relating to the Australian Army Museum of Western Australia. This “Virtual Discovery” focuses on the rail engines "Crab" and "Crayfish" on the Rottnest Military Railroad and the "Dolphin" at the Army Jetty.

Historical information

A dolphin is a man-made marine structure that extends above the water level and is not connected to shore. Dolphins are usually installed to provide a fixed structure when it would be impractical to extend the shore to provide a dry-access facility, Dolphins typically consist of a number of piles driven into the seabed and connected above the water level to provide a platform or fixing point. A dolphin formed part of the construction works undertaken to install the coast defence batteries at Bickley and Oliver Hill.

Contextual Information

The Rottnest Island was closed to the public for extended periods during the COVID-19 pandemic beginning in March 2020. The success of “Virtual Visi” series at the Australian Army Museum of Western Australia prompted the creation of a parallel series of “Virtual Discoveries” focussing on the military and heritage aspects of Rottnest island.
