JOHN CONNELL RESERVE CONCEPT PLAN 1991-2000
1991 - 2000John Connell Reserve is the area of land neighbouring the south-eastern boundary of Melville Glades Golf Club.
In the period 1991 to 2000 there was a proposal initiated by the Melville City Council to redevelop the John Connell Reserve and neighbouring reserves. The John Connell Reserve's previous life as a landfill site meant that the land was lying idle and the proposal oriented around the conversion of this and the other nearby reserves into sporting facilities, in particular, golf facilities. The area concerned was split by the reserve for the then proposed Roe Highway.
The proposal suggested the alternatives as:
- an 18 hole golf course
- a nine hole golf course
- a par three links golf course
- any combinations of the above
- other options
Obviously, the potential development of a golf course was of significant interest to MGGC, with some potential for the club to be involved in the operation of part of these facilities.
The attached series of documents over this period present some of the interactions involving the City of Melville, MGGC, Golf Course Designers and the nearby residents of the City. In addition, the documentation includes an undated proposal for golf facilities by the City of Canning in an area of land just a little further south east of John Connell Reserve (and east of Jandakot airport) that was called the Livingston Golf and Recreation Park. Dates in this documentation suggest it was applicable in the same period as the City of Melville proposals.
