Statement of significance

John Edward Smart served in 12th Lancaster Bomber squadron as a pilot in the Second World War. His crew fly thirty five operations together, and only lost one crew member when they filled in for another crew. Lancasters flew 156,000 operations with only one in three crews surviving 30 operations.
