World War 1, Europe, Western Front, ROBERTS, 1918
1918Studio portrait of Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Richard Harricks Roberts
From the age of 17 years the late Col Roberts took a keen interest in military matters. He was commissioned in January, 1901, and in that year he raised, and later commanded a company of the Goldfields Infantry Regiment. He had also been a member of the Victorian Rangers, the Perth Mounted Infantry and the Perth Regiment. He saw active service in the South African war as commanding officer of the 8th Australian Commonwealth Horse.
Shortly after the outbreak of the Great War he left Perth as second in command of the 11th Battalion AIF, and saw service with the battalion at Gallipoli and later, as its commanding officer, in France and Belgium. He was twice mentioned in dispatches. And was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.
