TOOL, MELLOR

Overview

A mellor, also known as a mellore or melor, is a tool for metal thread embroidery, made of a soft smooth metal that is not abrasive. It is paddle shaped on one end and pointed on the other and used to manipulate goldwork threads so that the stitcher handles the threads less. The narrower end is used as a stiletto to widen a hole in the ground fabric to poke a heavy twisted cord or metal thread to the back and can be used to form sharp corners. The rounded end is used to manoeuvre the metal thread into place, such as in curves.

It is also used for silk ribbon embroidery and for laying and controlling multiple strands of thread into position.

Poke it, press it, guide it, smooth it and tweek it with this tool!
