Overview

Deep,elongated, oval barrel shaped cast iron pot with an arched rod handle cranked at the highest point to accommodate a hook. The handle is limited to 90° travel from vertical to horizontal.. Near top rim on the long sides of the pot are wedge shaped grip handles, welded in place.

Historical information

This cooking pot was used by the Bettenay family to cook meals in over an open fire or fireplace when they first moved to Canning mills in 1895 to work at the timber mill. Joseph was the resident carpenter for the mill.
In 1903 the family purchased Irymple Orchard in Karragullen where they lived for the first few years in a timber slab hut. The family continue to run the orchard.
The Cannon Foundry was founded by brothers Edward and Stephen Sheldon at Deepfields, Coseley, Birmingham in 1826. It was known first as E. Sheldon & Company before changing to Cannon Hollowware Company Limited in 1884. In 1900 it changed again to Cannon Iron Foundries Ltd. In 1963 the company was bought out by G.E.C. then in 1993 the business was moved to Stoke-on-Trent.
