PADDOCK OF WHEAT

1910 - 1930

Overview

Black & white photo of paddock of long stalk wheat.

Historical information

Based on the photographic medium and style, this photo was likely taken between 1910 and 1930.
It features a distinct orthochromatic look, typical of early 20th-century film emulsions. This type of film was highly sensitive to blue light but insensitive to red, often resulting in starkly contrasted landscapes with pale, washed-out skies and deep, dense shadows in vegetation.
The silver mirroring, speckling, and chemical staining visible along the top margin are common aging characteristics of silver gelatin prints or glass plate negatives from the late-colonial and early federation eras of Australia.
The stalks of wheat are notably tall and uneven compared to modern, highly uniform dwarf varieties. This reflects older agricultural strains commonly grown in Western Australia's wheatbelt prior to mid-century industrial farming advancements.

Contextual information

There is a possibility this crop of wheat was associated with the experimental farm school, part of the Toodyay (formerly Newcastle) State School. New teaching methods were introduced here from about 1914 that focused on skills suited to future farmers and country residents including the use of small plots. See Shire of Toodyay photo 2001.1250 showing students standing in a wheat crop in 1917.
The tall element in the background has some resemblance to the background trees of another Shire of Toodyay photo 2001.1730 titled 'Wheat' Crop
