Historical information

This revolved was used by Thomas Buckingam and his family in the mid to late 1800s. It is believed that it was brought out with the family when they arrived in Western Australia aboard the Sofia in 1850. The family spent time farming around Bullsbrook and Gin Gin before, in 1856, they moved to the Kelmscott/Roleystone area to farm and cut timber. The pistol was purchased for self protection and was sometimes carried when travelling in remote areas. The pistol stayed in the family for many years before being donated to the museum.
The revolver is called a transition or transitional type revolver as they were a 'transition' from the perperbox type revolver with multiple barrel to the single barrel with multiple cylinders and cockable hammer revolver that is still used today. They were primarily manufactured in the mid 1800s.
