Kodj (axe)

A kodj is an axe which was made by Noongar people of the South West. ‘Kojonup’ translates to ‘place of the stone of the kodj’. Balga (or Xanthorrhea or grass tree) resin was mixed with plant fibre, ash and kangaroo dung to make a tar to fix the stone to a handle. The Balga resin is melted over heat and dried kangaroo dung and ash are added as a binding agent. This Kodj is from the Western Australian Museum's collection, and is on loan to Kodja Place.
