Trail Marker 2: Schooling in Wanneroo
School blackboard sculpture
The first Wanneroo School opened in what is now Greenwood in 1874 and closed within a few years due to insufficient students. In 1878 the Wanneroo Settlers Association requested a new school, and accepted a donation of 5 acres of land from John Buckingham as well as a 5 pound note towards building costs. The Wanneroo School began operations on 30 January 1899 on the corner of Wanneroo and Dundebar Roads, with 14 students and a teacher, Charles Shaw. The Old Schoolhouse is currently in Neville Park, next to Buckingham House and is still utilised for educational purposes. This blackboard artwork, Schooling in Wanneroo, was designed by Bryce Kershaw and is part of the Civic Trail (a walking trail through Wanneroo Townsite) and is a celebration of early education in Wanneroo.
