George Douglas Sedgwick was born on the 5th of November 1927 at Beverly, Western Australia. His family moved to Subiaco when he was 4 years old. He recalls his early thoughts of Subiaco as a farm kid and the games played with the neighbours and local kids in the street. He talks about the local shops and area as well as common household items and having a rear toilet hooked up to the sewage. George recalls the onset of the war and the mood towards this around Subiaco and about the circumstances that lead to him becoming an air raid warden along with the training and duties required for the job. He talks about his father’s job during the war being in charge of the local animal holding yards. He recalls his education at Thomas Street School and Perth Modern and talks about the change he has seen in Subiaco since he moved away in the 50’s.
