RADIO: DECCA DEBONETTE PORTABLE RADIO

Overview

Small green leatherette covered Decca Debonette portable radio. On the LH front a circular cream checkered plastic speaker with a gold rim. There is also a rectangular speaker of the same checkered plastic on the back. Cream open weave material backs the checkered plastic. There is a round dial for station selection of clear plastic with gold trim and a gold 'button' in the centre on the RH front. The pointer is red and the station writing is in red on white background. There are two small round cream plastic controls beneath the station dial, one for volume control and the other with "L M OFF" on it. The round central gold coloured 'button' is missing from the volume control. On the LH front top above the speaker is the word 'DECCA'. Each letter in red paint impressed on a small chrome rectangle. A red bar joins each rectangle. The whole is encased in green leatherette with a stitched handle attached with chrome studs. There is a small round hole on the l/h side and on the bottom r/h side each with a surround of cream plastic (for aerial and plug?). There are four small clear plastic covered stud feet on the bottom. The back has four small studs, one in each corner, and a 'finger hole' on the bottom edge.

Historical information

The radio was owned by Joan Harry (nee Talbot, born 1922 died 2002), who joined the RAF during WWII and served in it for 28 years. After the war she crewed VIP aircraft, including the first Comet jets. She travelled to the USSR, Australia (with Lord Louis Mountbatten), Canada, and USA. After the visit to Australia, she decided to settle in Perth, where she met her future husband Frank Harry at a dance. They were married in the early 1970s, and eventually lived in Subiaco from 1980. Joan bought the radio in London in the 1950s, and always carrried it on her travels. She still used it while living in Subiaco.
