Contextual Information

PERSONAL The new Mayor of Geraldton, Mr. William John Jose, was born in Fremantle in 1852. He first went to Geraldton in 1867, under engagement to Messrs. Scott and Gale, merchants, whom he afterwards left to enter the service of C. Crowther and Co., in 1874. He left that firm to start the well known Trefusis Aerated Water Factory in 1881, which he carried on up to the time of his departure for South Australia in 1895. Returning to Geraldton at the close of 1899, he again took over this factory, and carried on until July of this year, when he retired from business. Mr. Jose has had an extensive municipal experience. Previous to 1895 he served six years as councillor and was Mayor for six years. Mr. Jose is also president of the Northern Development League.
