Kath Dyer was born in Midland, Western Australia in 1933 and grew up in Swanbourne, where she attended primary school. She completed her secondary schooling at Claremont Central High in Bayview Terrace before joining the workforce, first as a shop assistant, then later a clerical position in accounting.
Kath and her husband Alf Dyer were introduced to baseball when they attended a night baseball game at Gloucester Park in Perth in the 1950s. Alf decided baseball was the game for him and joined the East Fremantle Braves 'A' Grade team. Their three sons, Geoff, Tom and Ian, also took up the sport, playing for the Braves.
In 1963, Tom's under-13s coach, John Foxton, asked Kath to score the next day's game. With no idea how to score, Kath took up the challenge, diligently studying the club's score book. So began Kath Dyer's more than 50 years of service as a baseball scorer, educator and administrator. One of her proudest achievements was writing an instructors' manual for scorers' accreditation. Kath also introduced the requirement for all home teams to provide shade, water and seating for both scorers at baseball games.

This oral history provides details of the highly significant contribution of Mrs Kath Dyer in advancing best practice when recording baseball statistics in Western Australia. The historic, statistical and social content would be a valuable aid when researching the sport in Australia.
