The Reeds
2010The Reeds
Standing at the corner of Brixton Street and Kenwick Road, The Reeds is a landmark public artwork inspired by the rich ecology of local wetlands. Six towering reed-like steel forms create an immersive pathway that invites visitors to walk through the sculpture, experiencing the landscape from the perspective of the insects and creatures that inhabit it.
Brightly coloured wetland species, including a prominent dragonfly and sculptural insects, bring the artwork to life and celebrate the beauty and importance of often-overlooked local fauna. Designed to encourage exploration and interaction, The Reeds offers moments of discovery at every scale, from its striking silhouette viewed from afar to the intricate details revealed up close.
By day, the sculpture's colours and forms reflect the surrounding natural environment, while integrated lighting transforms it into a dramatic nighttime landmark. As a place to gather, explore and connect, The Reeds has become a distinctive symbol of Kenwick Village and its unique wetland identity.
In 2010, the City of Gosnells had commenced the planning of an upgrade of Kenwick Village to enhance the local activity centre.
This project included a major upgrade of the park adjacent to the Kenwick Village Shopping area, underground power and replacement of street lighting, footpaths, improvement to streetscape and traffic calming.
An important element to the overall project involved three public art projects to assist in enhancing the community’s ‘sense of place’ connection to the area.
These public art projects include:
- Sculpture on the corner of Brixton Road & Kenwick Road (high traffic location);
- Bus shelter artwork on Kenwick Road; and
- Drinking water fountain interactive artwork on Shere Street Park, Kenwick.
