Telephones were used for communication between the range officer on the mound and the chief butts officer at the targets to maintain safety protocols and to seek clarification of a score for individual shooters. These clarifications were known as 'challenges' where the shooter disputes the score given to him by the person (a marker) that has indicated where the bullet passed through the target.
