HOURGLASS DOLPHIN (Lagenorhynchus cruciger)

This strikingly-colored little "lag" (maximum length 6 feet) is the southernmost of all the lags, and the only one found deep within the Antarctic. Because of the remoteness of its habitat, very little is known of this species. In addition to the prominent black and white markings, the animal also has a uniquely shaped dorsal fin, flattened and sharply hooked, and long, narrow, sickle-shaped flippers.
