BHS Annual Athletic Sports - Official Programme - 1933
1933The official programme for the 11th Athletic Meeting held at the Show Grounds on Wednesday, 18th October 1933
In the 1890s, a recreation area in South Bunbury was established as the local showgrounds where the Wellington Agricultural Society hosted its annual agricultural exhibitions. Contractors Wallis and Boundy built a picket fence, a timber pavilion (designed by architect J. Balding) and a cycle track.
The Bunbury Show Ground, as it became known, served as a primary agricultural, military, and sporting hub.
During 1941 and 1942, the site was utilized by the Australian Army's 10th Light Horse Regiment as a strategic training camp
The Bunbury Showground was renamed Forrest Memorial Oval in 1954, briefly held the name Municipal Oval, and finally became JE Hands Memorial Oval in 1961, named after local councillor and South Bunbury football stalwart JE Hands.
