Summary: Art dealer Arthur Spartalis came to live in Subiaco in 1961 at the age of 13. During the interview he talks of his memories of a changing suburb and of his strong recollections of Perth Modern School. He discusses the changed suburb in which he still resides and speaks of the strong family upbringing that he experienced growing up on Rokeby Road. Arthur recalls numerous popular locations within the suburb, and he highlights the importance of the suburb’s location within the wider metropolitan area from a child’s point of view and also from its current real estate popularity. Remembering his working-class background, Spartalis highlights the gentrification of the suburb that he has experienced in recent times giving his personal views on what he has seen.
Arthur Spartalis was a student at Perth Modern School in the 1960s and he would return to the school to teach Modern Languages in the 1970s. He speaks about the reputation of the school, the traditions, his experiences as a student and his great respect for the school and teachers. He talks about the changes Perth Modern School underwent and his connection to the Old-Modernians.
