Photograph: 4 Players in the Mud of Langley Park
1953Black and white photograph of 5 female basket ball players wearing their uniforms playing in the mud of the flooded grass courts at Langley Park. One lays down in the uddy puddle holding a leather basketball.
The reclaimed land that Langley Park sat on often became a muddy, unusable quagmire following heavy rain. After heavy rains, a sort of temporary 'lake' would form. In some places, the water was as high as 12 inches deep. If the matches could not be postponed then sometimes the players were forced to play on grounds almost completely covered in water, and the players themselves soon ended up coated in layers of thick mud.
