The bridge is of steel construction and has 2 ornate brick pillars with large light features either side of entrance. On the left is a tram, number '722', with 2 men, in uniform riding on the tram sideboard. Two white coloured horses with rider's are on the right of the photo and a man, in Egyptian traditional dress, can be seen walking in the foreground on right, away from the camera.
This series of black & white photographs was collected by Private Eric Sydney BANNISTER, regimental number 19. He joined the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) on the 11th August 1914, just a week after war was declared on Germany. The mission of the ANMEF was to destroy German radio stations and occupy German New Guinea and surrounding areas. The ANMEF secured military occupation on the 13th September 1914. The photographs are from two areas of Australian military deployment during the First World War. Ten (10) are from a deployment to German colony of New Guinea in 1914 and another eighty (80) from Cairo dated 1915 and 1916.The photographs of his deployment are of national significance and show one of Australia’s first military action in the First World War.

In the photo the tram has the number "722" printed on the front. Handwritten in black ink on back "Boulac Bridge - Cairo - / crossing the Nile."
One of Cairo’s iconic bridges, Boulac Bridge opened to the public in 1912 and throughout its history it carried people traffic by tram line, horseback, vehicles and pedestrians. The bridge was designed by the American engineer William Donald Scherzer and had a rolling and locking mechanism allowing it to also open to river traffic. It was demolished in 1998.
