Hand Stitched Sampler

c. 1865
Historical information

In the 1860s a teenage Mary Ann Jones would sit down at her farm home in Walkway, her hands busy as she stitched together this sampler. Was she instructed to make it to hone her skills as a future wife, or was it a simple indulgence to relish the pleasure of creativity? Perhaps she planned to add it to her glory box. Whatever she dreamed was not to be, as the young woman died in 1872, aged just 18.
