Overview

This is an antique Monarch diatonic button accordion (or squeeze box) of the sort that became ubiquitous with New Orleans and Cajun music. It has an ebonised wooden frame and the 11 fold green patterned carboard bellows have an unusual configuration with 3 thin folds, 1 wider fold, 3 thin folds, 1 wide fold, 3 thin folds. All folds have metallic corners with extra metallic protection on the wider folds. There are 10 wooden treble buttons attached to steel bronze reeds and the bass has 3 metal buttons (2 missing) on the thumb side of the palm rest and 6 metal buttons (4 missing) on other side. The Accordion bellows can be locked into the closed position by 2 tin braces. There are 3 beveled wooden buttons on the top edge of the accordion above the treble keyboard.

Historical information

This accordion was made in Germany and predates the Monarch Accordion Company which was founded in Denver Colorado in 1946.

These earlier Monarch accordions were assembled in a German factory in Kalbe that over time was owned by several families (possibly including Sterling and Hohner whose names are synonymous with German accordions). Accordion production at this factory ceased during WW2 when the factory was repurposed for the war effort and eventually bombed out of existence.
