Historical information

Artist Celestin Hutchinson was commissioned by the City in 2007 to complete a 2.4m (height) x 10.5m (length) mural entitled The Old Wanneroo Road, an acrylic on the westerly wall of the then newly constructed Carramar Community Centre. Bordering a half-size basketball court, this mural utilizes warm earthy colours to convey the Australian landscape of the past, its texture and warm glow, and the road (Old Wanneroo Road) that was used to reach Wanneroo up until late 70’s. Up until then, Wanneroo was only bush, a few farm houses and market gardens. The portrait of an Aboriginal man in amongst the ghost gums with many of the native animals that still inhabit this area honours the connection to the land of the Aboriginal groups of this area, in contrast to the new landscape that has emerged over the last 20+ years. The design expresses the spiritual elements of place. Local Carramar residents and youth helped to paint the mural under the artist’s supervision. Though the artwork is now over ten years of age, it has stood the test of time and is still in fantastic condition, resonating beautifully with the surrounding community.
