Historical information

Thelma Maureen Strauss was born in Carnarvon. Educated at New Norcia, she trained as a teacher. An excellent hockey player, she married cricketer Ray Strauss, and spent time in England and Sweden. On return she became a prominent administrator in WA gymnastics. In 1970s she joined the Community Recreation Council, became Claremont's first woman councillor and eventually deputy mayor (1971-1981). With Sally Anne Hasluck, she was a leading campaigner for the establishment of a museum in the old police station house. Through the 1980s and 90s she worked for the departments of Youth, Sport and Recreation, Industrial Affairs, and Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare, becoming executive officer to the Worksafe WA Commission
