Following other relatives, the Conning family relocated from Victoria after 1900 and settled in the Busselton district, leasing "Fairlawn" for a number of years.
Stephen Conning was the manager of the Busselton Butter Factory for 13 years (1902-1915), as well as a Councillor with the Busselton Municipal Board and Chairman of the Committee of Management of Busselton Hospital.
Stephen's sons, Henry and William, enlisted at Blackboy Hill in March 1916 and joined the 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment as one of the 20th reinforcements. At the end of WW1, Henry returned to W.A. and resumed dairying in and around Capel, before moving to Katanning and taking up farming in the district. He sat on the Roads Board of Katanning and was a Royal Agricultural Society member and President of the Katanning Agricultural Society.
