1912 Universal Pattern Saddle - Equipage - Canvas Water Bucket

Overview

World War 1 era canvas water bucket with a tarred jute rope carrying handle passing through brass eyelets on each side of the bucket and spliced to form loops. The top edge of the bucket has a sleeve threaded through with rope for reinforcement and to steady the bucket when it is full of water. The body of the bucket is secured for attachment to the saddle, when empty, by a brown leather strap with a brass buckle, passed several times around the bucket.

Historical information

Water bucket carried by members of the Australian Light Horse to provide water for their horses as well as personal ablutions.

Contextual Information

An original water bucket from the Australian Army Museum of WA collection is currently on loan for display at the National ANZAC Centre at the Princess Royal Fortress in Albany. The Light Horse mounted diorama in the Desert Mounted Corps display contains a replica as part of the saddle accoutrements.
