Wax Seal Stamp 'LBH Wanneroo'
A brown wooden handle, painted black, wax seal that is shaped for hand use. The paint on the wooden handle is peeling away. A brass screw is located on one side of the wooden handle. A solid brass circular seal with stamp imprint is located at one end of the object.
This seal was used by Health Inspectors before the 1970s to produce a wax seal on food sample containers before sending them to an approved analysis for testing. The purpose of this wax seal was to provide evidence in court that the sample was not tampered with during transport to the Laboratory. The impression made on the wax was WANNERU (it is not known why Wanneroo was spelt this way) and LBH which stands for 'Local Board of Health'. Today Health Inspectors are called Environmental Health Officers and they carry on the same work, but use tamperproof stickers instead of wax seals. Food samples are taken to test them against legislation relating to the following: Preservatives in meat such as sulphur dioxide; Alcohol content in wines; Quantity and type of meat in pies and other foods; Pathogenic bacteria in food suspected of causing food poisoning.
