Smoking Jacket

Overview

Historical information

This velvety green smoking jacket once belonged to one of the district’s wealthiest women - Jane Grant. Grant lived on Moonyoonooka Station in the early 1900s and was not one to suffer fools.

While other ‘ladies’ of the day stayed inside, Grant would don pants and work boots to work the fields with the men. The divorcee didn’t give two hoots what people thought of her and lived life as she pleased, setting tongues wagging with her unladylike ways. She is even said to have embarked on a spot of topless horse riding when it took her fancy!

Of one man who displeased her, she was said to have “hit him over the head with a rake and plaited his legs” It seems Jane Grant was not one to mess with!
