Bath Chair

Historical information

First used by Lady Forrest (nee Margaret Hamersley), the widow of Western Australia's first Premier, Sir John Forrest.

Lady Forrest passed away in 1929. The bath chair was then acquired for Grace McGuiness (nee Bunter) a rather large elderley woman living at Bootenal on the Back Flats. Grace had to have a leg amputated due to circulatory problems.

After Grace's death in 1939 the bath chair was donated to the nearby Bootenal Convent for the use of Mother Columba.

So that Mother Columba could attend mass at St John's. A rope was attached to the front of the chair and she would be pulled through the sand to church.
