Image: Sepia portrait photograph of Norman Samuel Oats (date of birth 31/5/1898) worked in Fogarty's Barber shop in Rokeby Road from 1914 to 1916, then enlisted in the army. He was killed in action 'somewhere in France' on 7 October 1917, aged 19 years 5 months.

Norman Samuel Oats served in Wrold War One 1914-1918. His service number was 6802 and he served as a Private in the 11th Australian Infantry Battalion Unit of the Australian Imperial Force. His Unit embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board HMAT A8 Argyllshire on 9 November 1916. He was killed on 7 October 1917 in Belgium aged 19. His name is on the Honour Roll at the Australian War Memorial, the Fallen Soilders War Memorial in Subiaco and Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.

He was born in Esperance, WA. His parents Samuel and Maud Oats lived at 323 Barker Road, Subiaco, Western Australia
