Overview

"Souvenir of Palestine" The main street of Jaffa

Historical information

The Battle of Jaffa, occurred during the Southern Palestine Offensive during World war 1. On 16 November 1917, the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade captured the port of Jaffa, after defeating Ottoman forces at Ayun Kara. However, Ottoman troops remained only 3 miles away across the Auju (Yarkon) River, making Jaffa vulnerable to artillery fire. To secure the area, the 52nd (Lowland) Division launched a night assault on 20-21 December, crossing the Auju River and driving the Ottomans back by 5 miles. This move allowed the British forces to control the area and secure the strategic link between Jaffa and Jerusalem.
