Contextual Information

Garry Zeck, born in 1941 in Perth WA, has spent his entire life living and working across Western Australia. He received his education at Hale School in West Perth, where he was introduced to art by tutors such as Robert Juniper and Owen Garde. Later, while teaching art at Kalgoorlie College, he pursued further education and obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Edith Cowan University.

Zeck's artistic journey began with his first exhibition in 1967, marking the start of a prolific career. He has showcased his work regularly since then, earning several awards along the way. Initially focused on painting and drawing, Zeck's interest in ceramics blossomed in 1974 during a residency at Fremantle Arts Centre, and it now holds an equal place in his artistic repertoire.

Having grown up in a creative environment, with a father skilled in hairdressing, wig making, and photography, and a mother who was a pianist and composer, Zeck's early exposure to art laid a solid foundation for his explorations and ideas. His artwork, spanning over fifty solo exhibitions and numerous group shows, can be found in State and National galleries, Shire collections, and countless private collections.

Zeck's distinctive style is characterized by a fusion of oriental aesthetics with Australian inspiration. Influenced by Chinese and Japanese art, his work often draws upon motifs and processes from the Australian landscape. A master of his craft, Zeck's expertise in ceramics is evident in his ability to manipulate clay with finesse, experimenting with various techniques and forms to bring his creative visions to life.

An inventor at heart, Zeck designs his own tools, kilns, and clay, allowing him the freedom to express his ideas with unparalleled creativity. His artwork exudes spontaneity and gestural energy, inviting viewers to embark on a journey of exploration and discovery. Through his passion and dedication, Zeck continues to push the boundaries of ceramic practice, leaving an indelible mark on the Australian art scene.
