Near Paris
Oil paint on strainer
Le Lavandou, also known as 'Near Paris,' is a title based on identification of its location, which appears to be Le Lavandou in the south of France, along the Mediterranean coast. The painting bears a French canvas maker's mark on the verso, attributed to Lucien Lefevbre, indicating its origin in France, most likely at Les Landes, where the artist Bunny had his studio. It is believed to have been painted around 1923 from a small oil sketch executed on-site. Another rendition of the painting exists in Perth, titled 'Provence Landscape,' which is part of the Wesfarmers collection and slightly smaller in size than 'Near Paris.' Although unsigned, this version exhibits minor differences in detail, such as the absence of the blossoming tree featured in 'Near Paris.'
This work was donated as part of the Claude Hotchin Bequest in 1958.
