M59 Field Stove with M2 Burner

Overview

The M59 gasoline field range outfit was designed to provide a complete outfit adaptable to the different requirements of field operations. The outfit consisted of a cabinet with a burner unit, accessory outfit, and necessary cooking utensils. The outfit was portable and could be operated while in transit.
Many Armies used this style of stove/oven/burner combination or a locally manufactured equivalent. The outfit underwent continuing minor improvements from a sound World War 2 design. Its petrol burner could be a hazard with unskilled or careless users.

Historical information

One field range was adequate for 50 personnel or less. With two ranges, you can cook for 50 to 100 personnel. With three ranges, you can cook for as many as 225 people.

Contextual Information

The range outfit can be used for boiling, roasting, frying, and griddle cooking and can be adjusted to work as a bake oven. Some baking can be done in the covered roasting pan or in the cake pan placed inside the covered roasting pan. Pies bake well in the roasting pan alone. Large square pies made from scratch and baked in the roasting pan were always a treat in the field. They were far tastier and more nutritious than the commercial, fast frozen, heat and serve, small circular pies presented today.
