2ND ANZAC CONVOY FROM ALBANY, 31 DECEMBER 1914
1914Panoramic view of the 2nd ANZAC convoy ships spread out and lying at anchor in King George Sound. This convoy transported 1st Australian Imperial Force (AIF) troops to Egypt, where they would later fight in the Middle East and Europe. The ships started arriving in King George Sound on 28/12/1914, having embarked their complement of troops at Eastern States ports and New Zealand. Albany was chosen as the best place for the convoy to form due to the space in KG Sound for the ships to anchor and the facility of the inner harbour where the ships could take on water and bunkers and their complement of troops could exercise. No shore leave was permitted.
