ESPLANADE HOTEL, ALBANY, 1955
c. 1955Coloured post card size image of the of Ellen Cove, Middleton Beach, Albany. Just left of centre image is the Esplanade Hotel, the second of four iterations named the Esplanade Hotel to be built on the same site and later either destroyed or demolished. Taken from a position close to the viewing platform on the current Ellen Cove board walk it shows what is with out doubt the best version of the Esplanade to grace the site. To the far right centre image is the early beach-front Middleton beach caravan park and just above/left of this the original "Hybal" cottage.
The hotel that can be seen here replaced the old original timber Esplanade Hotel destroyed by fire in 1908. When first completed in 1911 it boasted a all modern conveniences, a septic system, electric light, telephones and hot water! Some claimed firsts for Albany included limited undercover garage parking, a children's nursery, drawing and billiards rooms with a patrons dining room able to seat seventy people.
