DOULTON COMMEMORATIVE JUG - GORDON'S STAND AT KHARTOUM

Overview

A late nineteenth-century stoneware jug with a buff body that has been wheel-thrown, with applied stamped relief decoration in white, brown and dark green.
Below the spout, on the front, is a relief bust of Gordon in Military uniform, wearing a fez. Above the relief is a scroll-like decoration with "GENERAL GORDON" in white lettering.
To the left side:- "GOVERNOR-GENERAL" in sash/banner. OF THE SOUDAN. 1874. "BY THE HELP OF GOD I WILL HOLD THE BALANCE LEVEL"; dash-dot-dash underneath. 'BORN - JAN. 28. 1833.
To the right side of the jug:- "HERO OF HEROES" in sash/ banner shape. 'KHARTOUM' centred below it. Below that is "I DECLINE TO AGREE THAT YOUR RELIEF EXPEDITION IS FOR ME" BETRAYED. JAN. 26, 1885.
