Nestled inside the Geraldton Heritage Precinct, Ngurra Barlunguu, is one of Geraldton's most historic buildings.
The Victoria District Hospital started from humble beginnings back in the 1850’s when the convict shelter situated on the site set up a simple sick bay tent. In 1864 the site was deemed the best location for the colonial hospital.
In 1887 the first building was officially opened and named to honour Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee year. This was a 40 bed Hospital for the area.
The Victoria District Hospital consists of four structures – Victoria House (1887), Campbell House (opened in 1895 during the height of Typhoid) and Crowley House and Theatre (1897).
The hospital was still in operation until Geraldton Regional Hospital opened its doors in 1966!
Volunteers from the ex-Victoria District Hospital Staff Association have collected medical memorabilia which is on display in Victoria House, showing medical books, equipment and historical uniforms.
