40 Years of Local Government

About This Collection

The City of Wanneroo is one of Western Australia’s largest and fastest growing local government areas. Located on the north-eastern fringe of the Perth metropolitan area, between 12 and 60 kilometres from the Perth CBD.

Covering more than 687 square kilometres, the City is home to more than 220,000 people across 36 distinctive suburbs from Two Rocks to Koondoola, and it continues to grow. Our rich history dates back to pre-1834, when Whadjuk and Yued people moved around Wanneroo's coastal sandplain according to the six Noongar seasons.

The first meeting of the Wanneroo Roads Board established in 1902 was held in January 1903, following the district's first elections, in the Wanneroo School House. The Wanneroo Roads Board went on to become the Shire of Wanneroo in 1961 and gained City status on the 31 October 1985. In 1998, the City was split into the Shire of Wanneroo and the City of Joondalup, but the Shire of Wanneroo regained its city status in 1999.
