From 14–20 October, Get Online Week is back, and this year’s campaign is supported by a grant from the Good Things Foundation, awarded to AMaGA WA for a series of exciting activities. The focus of this initiative is to empower Australians, particularly older generations, to build their confidence in using digital technology. Collections WA is proud to be participating in Get Online Week 2024, encouraging digital participation, helping to bridge the digital divide, and having some fun along the way.

GIF It UP!

A key event this year is the GIF IT UP competition, where participants are encouraged to remix open access images from cultural collections into creative and fun GIFs. It’s run by Europeana in partnership with organisations from around the world, including the National Library of Australia's Trove.

Throughout October, GIF-makers and cultural heritage fans are invited to create new GIFs from open access digital collections. Great prizes are on offer for the best entries, which will be judged by the public and a jury of creative experts. It's a great opportunity to explore Australia's collections but those from around the world via Europeana, Digital Public Libraries America, DigtalNZ, DAG Online (India), Art Institute of Chicago, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec, Centro de Fotografía de Montevideo, and JapanSearch.

As an accessible platform for Western Australian heritage collections, Collections WA is encouraging all contributors to take part in GIF IT UP. To ensure your collection is eligible, simply tick the "Syndicate to Trove" option in your Collections WA account profile by 1 October 2024. Only records shared with Trove will be eligible for use in this international competition, allowing your collections to reach a global audience through the Trove network.

In addition to GIF IT UP, Collections WA is holding a public demonstration of Collections WA, sharing a variety of digital skills-building opportunities, and hosting tours of the Digitisation Centre of Western Australia to see behind the scenes.
