CWA Cookbooks

About This Collection

At the 1931 State Conference members were requested to send in recipes to Mrs. Agnes Barnes at Baandee, well known cookery expert, as work had been proceeding on a countrywomen's cookery book for some time. When, after a year, only 23 branches had responded, Mrs. Barnes embarked upon a personal appeal, suggesting that contributors' names be published with their recipes. The response was overwhelming, and by May, 1933, sufficient recipes were in hand. No funding being available, publication was delayed until E S Wigg & Son agreed to print it, offering a royalty of 3d. per copy. The C W A Cookery Book and Household Hints was first sold at the 1936 Conference at 2/6 per copy or 5/- cloth bound. The ingenuity, resourcefulness and thrift of countrywomen as seen in the published household hints is worthy of study by historians of the depression years.
The 28th edition of the Cookery book was yet another revision, this time to convert to metric measure. Several members helped with this long and difficult task.
A special Centenary edition has been published to celebrate 100 years of CWA of WA.
