In 1970, Bullen's African Lion Safari Park was established at Carabooda and run by John Gilbertson. Opening day was 21st August, 1971. The park opened with two lion compounds consisting of 32 lions and four cubs. A mixed animal compound that included donkeys, camels, ostrich's and a mini zoo with monkeys, kangaroos, emu's, camels, huskies, guinea pigs, a snake pit and a variety of birds. The park was set up so that visitors would drive through the park in their cars, allowing them to view the animals in safety. The lion park closed in 1988 due to the high cost of animal feed and the high public liability insurance.
