These items belonged to Hugo Reginald Schmidt, a Subiaco hairdresser and tobacconist in the early 1900’s.
Hugo Schmidt was born in Germany in 1888 and would later travel by sea to Australia, arriving in Fremantle on November 10, 1907, as a young man. He established himself as a tobacconist and hairdresser at 317 Hannan Street, Kalgoorlie as his first business venture in Australia. On August 20, 1913, Mr Schmidt and Violet Walters married in the Methodist Church of Narrogin, before returning to Kalgoorlie as newlyweds.
Mr and Mrs Schmidt moved in the 1920s, and opened a new shop, ‘Schmidt HR Hairdresser and Tobacconist’ at 5 Rokeby Road, Subiaco, and by 1939 had established themselves as residents at 70 Tyrell Street, Nedlands.
