Historical information

HMAS Warramunga II (FFH152) is the second RAN ship to carry the name ‘Warramunga’. Built as the third of 8 Anzac Class ships by Tenix Defence Systems in Williamstown, Victoria, Warramunga was launched on 23 May 1998 and commissioned on 31 March 2001. The name ‘Warramunga’ (also spelt Warumungu) came from the name of the indigenous population near Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory of Australia. The top of the ship’s badge shows a naval crown underneath which a Warramanga tribesman is poised to throw a boomerang set against a blue and yellow background that represents the sky and desert hillside. A crossed boomerang, stone axe and fighting club are also featured and beneath these is the ship’s motto: COURAGE IN DIFFICULTIES.
