Virtual Discovery #42 - "Coffin Head" Revealed
Part of a series of “Virtual Discovery” presentations featuring the military heritage of Rottnest island produced in parallel with Virtual Visit posts relating to the Australian Army Museum of Western Australia. This “Virtual Discovery” focuses on one of the military horses on Rottnest, "Coffin Head"
If your animal was described as parrot mouthed, cow hocked, roach backed and with a ewe neck what would you have. All these terms are from a list which describe, usually in a negative context, physical features found on horses. One horse on Rottnest was described as coffin headed, meaning he had a disproportionately large head. Coffin Head was the Battery cart horse assigned to Kingstown. He features in episodes in several oral histories mainly associated with the antics of his handlers which resulted in his attendance at various social functions.

The Rottnest Island was closed to the public for extended periods during the COVID-19 pandemic beginning in March 2020. The success of “Virtual Visi” series at the Australian Army Museum of Western Australia prompted the creation of a parallel series of “Virtual Discoveries” focussing on the military and heritage aspects of Rottnest Island.
