Pre 1914, Magazine Lantern, Fremantle, Fort Arthur Head, 1910

Overview

Typical pattern, kerosine Magazine Lantern. This lamp likely was part of the original Magazine fittings at Fort Arthur Head in Fremantle. The magazines were deactivated in 1942 when the 6 inch Mk VII guns were relocated to the Leighton Battery in Mosman Park.

Historical information

Lighting in underground ammunition storage areas, called Magazines, was originally provided by lanterns with special candles or kerosine mixtures. As a basic safety precaution, there was always a window between the source of illumination and the stored black powder or propellant.
The lamps varied in design and manufacture but were normally constructed of copper. They had from one to four glass windows depending on location and use.

The original lanterns have been modified to form a standard light. This light stand latterly formed part the Royal United Services Institute library furnishings at Swan Barracks, in central Perth. It consists of a worked wrought iron stand suspending two Artillery Magazine Lamps. The copper lantern frames now have a coloured patina overpainting and the original kersone light sources have been replaced by electrical fittings. The bulls-eye lens has also been replaced with a flat window.
