Overview

Part of the "From the Collection" series prepared and distributed to a subscribers' list during 2022 as a follow on to the "Virtual Visit" series initiated during the COVID lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 The collection focus of this item is the Vickers Machine Gun

Historical information

The Vickers machine gun was based on the successful Maxim gun of the late 19th century. After purchasing the Maxim company in 1896, Vickers improved the Maxim gun, inverting the mechanism as well as reducing its weight, simplifying the action and using high strength alloys. The British Army adopted the Vickers gun under the name Gun, Machine, Mark I, Vickers, .303-inch in 1912. Remaining in service until the 1960s, the Vickers had a reputation for great solidity and reliability.

The Vickers displayed at the Australian Army Museum of WA is central to the story of the 2/4 Machine Gun Battalion.

Contextual Information

Typically only a small portion of a museum collection is exhibited at any one time. This is due not only to practical consideration of display space but a range of professional considerations designed to protect and preserve the artefact. This series highlights objects and stories you may have overlooked in the galleries or collection items awaiting the opportunity to be viewed and share their story.
