HORSE TROUGHS HISTORY Have you ever wondered about those concrete horse troughs , still seen in parts of NEW SOUTH WALES & VICTORIA which bear the inscription :Donated by Annis & George .Bills,Australia While very few are now in use by a minute draught horse population other troughs are usually empty showing signs of age or have .been converted into flower boxes .Many have been removed because of road works etc But -----'Who were Annis & George Bills ?' The story begins in 1859 when G B was born in Brighton Eng..He came to AUST .as a young man & he & his brother established a wire manufacturing business in Kent St Sydney succesfull over many years .During his life time , he took a keen interest in seeking out cases of human need & gave thousands of pounds to the needy.George Died 1927 & his wife Annis 1910.His will directed The residueof his income of his estate to be used to provide troughs for horses & for preventing cruelty etc of animals in any country More than 500horse troughs wereerected in Aust. ,mostly New South Wales & Vict. &some in overseas countries England ,Ireland Sth Wales Switzland (for donkeys ) Japan America Canada Rumania &Sth Africa He left approx.90, ooo pounds to provide horse & some dog troughs --agreat sum of money in 1927 Now Merredin have 2 horse & dog troughs in the area.one is between the lawn & rose gardeninBarrack St. Opposite the Telstra building.The other is against the wallof the hotel inHines Hill..The Merredin trough was accompanied by a plaque when it was put in.Thisis now held by the Merredin Museum & Historical Soc .We are interested in any additional information about Annis & George Bills
